It is recommended all students taking a foreign
language take four consecutive semesters of the same language. Students will then be eligible to receive one
(1) foreign language state credit towards high school graduation requirements.

Native Language Instruction Grade

This course provides native language support for
recent immigrant students who lack literacy in their native language or who
have had interrupted schooling in their country of origin. Students will develop reading and writing
skills through intensive native language instruction using authentic Spanish
literature and grammar books.
MF700, MF800 Exploratory
Language Grade
Placement: 6, 7, 8
The Exploratory Language course is designed to
acquaint students with several languages and their cultures (such as Spanish,
French, and German) so that they can make an informed choice in selecting a
language for further development.
MF610 French Grade
Placement: 6
At the novice proficiency level, students will engage
in communication activities, make comparisons of their culture to Francophone
countries (i.e., the “bise”), French family
traditions, meals and table settings, and use geographical information to gain
insight into community settings. In this
beginning course, a student will understand and use phrases and expressions
about daily routines and topics, listen to audio and view video presentations
to extend their communication skill and extend knowledge in guided
conversations, and will use a CD-ROM program to provide multimedia integration
and enhance community awareness through internet connections.

This continuing beginning level course will extend the
foundation for French proficiency at the novice level. Through videos and literature, an
understanding of the practices and perspective of French culture will be
developed. Practice of nasal sounds and
linguistic patterns will help the student to discriminate sounds in meaningful
context, distinguish variations in sounds and intonation patterns, and
comprehend basic structures, expressions, and vocabulary. Students will practice written and spoken
basic verb tenses. Students who enrolled in a two-year language program will earn one (1)
high school credit with the successful completion of this course.

Lessons provide students with a sound basis for
learning German as it is spoken and written today and with increased awareness and
understanding of the German-speaking world, its people, and its culture. Major emphasis is given to developing the
basic language skills: listening,
comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.
In this beginning course, students incorporate communication skills such
as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and showing. Students develop these communication skills
by using knowledge of the language, including grammar, culture, communication,
and learning strategies. Students completing this course in Grade 7
and continuing with the study of German in Grade 8 will complete one (1) unit
of foreign language credit towards high school graduation requirements.

MF821 German Iab Grade

Prerequisite: MF720
The study of German language and life continues
through the use of authentic literature and technology. It is designed to increase comprehension and
fluency through conversation, grammar, reading, and writing, and to increase
the knowledge and understanding of German culture. This course helps students enhance the communicative
language learning experience when dealing with familiar topics. Practice continues in developing the
students’ basic language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
while reviewing and expanding the structures and vocabulary as well as
increasing the students’ knowledge of German culture. Students demonstrate understanding of simple,
clearly spoken, and written language and use the language to obtain, reinforce,
and/or expand knowledge of other subject areas.
Students who enrolled in a
two-year language program will earn one (1) high school credit with the
successful completion of this course.

Students will demonstrate knowledge of Japanese at
novice-low, novice-mid proficiency level tasks.
These tasks include learning greetings, numbers, social interaction
expressions, questions, and preferences.
Students will master Hiragana (50 letters and sounds), Katakana (50
letters and sounds), and learn cultural components. In this course, a student incorporates
communication skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and
showing. Students develop these
communication skills by using knowledge of the language, including grammar, and

communication and social interaction in Japanese. In addition, students will describe, give
directions, give simple suggestions, express requests, prepare food, and
provide simple descriptions of common holidays and traditions. This course continues to help students
enhance the communicative language learning experience when dealing with
familiar topics in Japanese culture.
Students will demonstrate continued development of communication skills
by using knowledge of the language to interact in specific social
interactions. Students who enrolled in a two-year language program will earn one (1)
high school credit with the successful completion of this course.

to the level of language proficiency of the student.

Students begin with some knowledge of the Spanish
language. This course provides
opportunities for students to increase their knowledge of the language through
emphasis on reading and writing.
Students also learn to communicate in a wide range of areas and a
variety of everyday situations. Through
the use of legends and stories, students broaden their understanding of
Hispanic culture. Students taking this course in Grade 8 will not receive credit towards
high school graduation.

completion of this course.
MF875 Spanish for Spanish Speakers Iab Grade

This course continues to help students increase their
knowledge of the language through emphasis on reading, writing, and improving
their communication skills. The course
also provides for a broader understanding of the Hispanic culture and
Spanish-speaking countries through a variety of instructional medial. Students
who enrolled in a two-year language program will earn one (1) high school
credit with the successful completion of this course.
