LANGUAGE ACQUISITION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL
PROGRAM
The Language Acquisition for Middle School Program
(LAMP) addresses the needs of students with limited English proficiency. The program’s commitment is to address
English language acquisition and fluency in addition to providing students with
academic content material. Limited
English proficient students enter middle school at different levels of LAMP and
are scheduled for a different progression of course work
depending on their individual program entry level.

IA Grade
Placement: 6, 7, 8
English for beginners has been designed to
specifically address the needs of preliterate students with no formal
schooling, students literate in another primary language, students literate in
non-Roman alphabets, and students with interrupted schooling. This course will provide instructional
opportunities for English language development while incorporating ESL TEKS
requirements.

Reading Grade
Placement: 6, 7, 8
This reading course has been designed to build basic
vocabulary and language patterns, develop concepts of print, listening and
reading comprehension, and knowledge of text structures.
MM682, MM782, MM882 Sheltered Mathematics Grade Placement: 6, 7, 8
This course is taught by a certified mathematics

Essential English competencies are developed to
effectively interact in a social studies class.
Students acquire social studies TEKS and develop social studies concepts
through the use of ESOL strategies.

Language I Grade
Placement: 6, 7, 8
This course provides native language support for
recent immigrant students who lack literacy in their native language or who
have had interrupted schooling in their country of origin. Students will develop reading and writing
skills through intensive native language instruction using authentic Spanish
literature and grammar books. A
certified Spanish teacher teaches this course.

The intermediate level English course develops
language acquisition by building language and vocabulary using authentic
multicultural lessons and writing projects with specialized strategies that
support success for English learners.

Placement: 6, 7, 8
The intermediate level reading course develops
language and vocabulary to promote reading and learning through the use of ESOL
strategies and multicultural literature to promote success for English
learners.
MS682, MS782, MS882 ESOL II for Social Studies Grade Placement: 6, 7, 8
The intermediate level social studies course provides
essential English competencies, related vocabulary and social studies TAKS concepts
are developed through the use of ESOL strategies and hands-on interactive
activities.

IIIA Grade

The advanced level English course builds language and
vocabulary to develop writing skills through strategies tailored to English
learners. The course focuses on grammar,
usage, mechanics, and spelling to support success for English learners.

The advanced level reading course builds vocabulary
and teaches key strategies to assist students with reading comprehension and
provides abundance practice to promote fluency for English learners.

The transitional English course provides abundant
practice for each grammar skill to help students master the complexities of
English and systematic reviews to ensure mastery of concepts. The writing projects give students experience
with the modes and forms of writing assessed on TAKS.
MR684, MR784, MR884 ESOL IVB for Reading Grade
Placement: 6, 7, 8
The transitional reading course provides authentic,
multicultural literature to build language and vocabulary to support English
learners. The students will increase
their communication and interpretation skills with multiple genres and forms of
writing to prepare students for the mainstream.

Workshop Grade
Placement: 6, 7, 8
The readers’ workshop will provide strategies and
support in reading for struggling readers and English learners to close gaps in
language and literacy through extensive vocabulary development and skills
practice, direct instruction in reading strategies, and fully supported writing
projects.
